We started this project by facing the challenge based on the owner’s need and interests to build an iconic office that has a lasting aesthetic. As a solution, we try to apply the concept of wabi-sabi with the use of basic geometry. We believe that designing essential forms is a method of achieving timelessness. The firm and straightforward mass of the building is the idea to create the solidity of the design.
The building tried not to embrace the variety of forms or ornamentations, we tried to apply a basic aesthetic value to the design by placing a cube mass and maximizing the function. Exposed concrete as the main exterior materials which has been designed in accordance with the Japanese Philosophy of wabi-sabi that celebrates imperfection, impermanent, incomplete, and free of associative manipulation. This core aesthetic value is to reinforce the idea of posing falses, contrast, dualities, which is represented from how the building ages. The process of aging of the building could create a natural, honest aesthetic and cannot be repeated, and this can be driven by exposing the concrete. We are looking for the buildings that could be seen to be at peace within themselves, creating perception to be calm.
The main challenge is not only about the design but also about how we transfer the spirit to the owner as a user by convincing the differentiation between this idea with the word of “unfinished” impression.
